    2017 President’s Report – Andrew Coxall

Well another season has come and gone and 2017 was a season of contrasts in many ways.
On the field, we had another relatively successful year, with all 4 senior sides making finals once again (and the mighty masters remained undefeated – once again!) and the Reserves bringing home another flag to pin on the wall for the club.
Unfortunately for our league side it was a case of history repeating itself once again and while it hurts just as much as any other preliminary final we have lost recently, I have great hopes for this young group to take this club forward. In years gone by it has been the ‘old guard’ trying to drag our club from C3 into the higher grades and where they failed, I have every confidence that our young eels will drive us forward and take us where we want to go.

Our Colts and thirds sides were under the pump from the very start of the year and with unfavourable fixturing, it made it extremely difficult for the rest of the club to see the boys in these sides play each week. This is something the club is hoping to rectify for season 2018 as with the facility that we enjoy – there shouldn’t be any reason for the WAAFL to split our club up each week!

I am very proud of the fact that our club managed to put the wheels in motion to have women’s side play football under the eels banner in 2018. In July this year we entered a side into the WAFC Senior Women’s Community Carnival – with only a week or so recruiting, we managed to have 16 ladies don the Eels Guernsey in 3 games on a Sunday afternoon – including two wins!! What a credit to the girls, considering the majority had never kicked a footy in their lives! I am so excited to have Dezzi Giles on board from 2018 as our Women’s Football Coordinator. Dez is an athlete through and through and her passion for the game is an asset to our club – we are looking forward to the challenge ahead!

Off the field the Eels enjoyed a very successful year and I cannot thank my executive committee enough for the support and advice they have offered me in my first term as president. Without good help, it just would not be possible to run the club in an efficient manner.

Personally this year was a steep learning curve and to be honest, When I first put my hand up last year, I did not fully understand how big of a job this role actually would be, I am sure I made some mistakes however and should I be re-elected for the 2017/8 season I will be much better prepared for the challenges that lay ahead.

In signing off I would like to thank you all for the opportunity to lead our club in 2016/17 , I have enjoyed the role and learnt so much about not only myself but about many others as well. I hope you all enjoy your ‘offseason’ and I look forward to (hopefully) leading our great club for the 2017/18 season.
