Coaches Report 22nd Feb 2010
Posted on February 23rd, 2010 No commentsI’d like to start this weeks report by announcing Paul Saylor as our club captain for the 2010 football season. Sayls will be in his 4th year with the Eels and has displayed great leadership during his time at the club and certainly deserves to lead the playing group this year. Jesse Manning will be his right hand man as the vice-captain. Jesse’s enthusiasm during pre-season to date has been fantastic and both players will develop a close relationship as the year goes on. I have high expectations from players within the team’s leadership group, and I’m very confident that both Sayls and Jesse will bring many values to the side. Congratulations lads, I look forward to working with you both during our premiership journey.
Congratulations also must go to our Reserve Grade co-captains (Shane and Wyvan). Both players bring a great deal of experience to the Ressies and if the leadership both players have shown so far is any indication then I have no doubt that they’ll do an exceptional job.
Now to our second Intra-Club match that was held on Sunday evening, what a success it was. Both Muz and myself have nothing but praise towards our playing group and even though there were some outstanding individual performances, overall it was a good team effort. There are so many positives that we can all take away from both intra-club matches and the pressure’s now on the coaching staff to pick two strong sides for our coming trial matches.
Those players who deserve a mention from the intra-club match are Johno, who enjoyed the free run out on the wing, Jesse and Jonesy linked up well through the midfield. Snow played a solid game out on the wing and through the middle, Robbie Schnaars was sensational up forward and Aaron Power provided great height throughout our defensive zone. All up I was more than impressed with everyone’s performance and congratulations to the Blue team who ended up winning 10.8 to 8.3.
Before I go I’d like to remind you all that the club training day is coming up on the 6th March so make sure you all keep this day free as maximum attendance will be expected.
Keep up the great work Eels, I’m looking forward to the Kwinana Game.

(Who Dares Wins)Intra-Club match 7th Feb 2010
Posted on February 8th, 2010 No commentsOur first Intra-Club match proved to be a great success on Sunday night. Playing 17-aside footy at Coolaman Oval “The Home of the Eels” the boys were split into two even teams and played four 15-minute quarters.
The first quarter was a little scrappy as the players took a little time to adjust to a game situation. Jesse was outstanding in the middle during the first term which gave the White team great drive from the centre bounces and stoppages. At the quarter time siren the White team found themselves in front 2 goals to 1.
Both sides hit the ground full of run during the second quarter and apart from some poor disposal going forward at times the Blue team took control. Sayls was out-standing through the middle and was well supported by Snow and Boogs. The half-time score was tied up at 3 goals apiece.
During the second half both sides started to play a bit more free-flowing footy which allowed the overall standard to lift. Jonesy was superb throughout the last half as he broke the lines through the defensive zone for the White team. Chris Sims kicked into gear and started to use the footy well as well as Duncan, Stew, and Devo, in the end though it was the Blue team finishing on top winning 9.7 to 6.3.
All up there were some encouraging signs for our first hit-out and it gave both myself and Muzz the opportunity to see players perform when put under pressure. There are still quite a few things we’ll need to improve on over the coming weeks but we couldn’t be more impressed with the way the game was played. Overall the day was a success as quite a few players certainly put their hands up to play League footy this year, that’s for sure.
Before signing off, just a quick reminder to the playing group about our Biathlon on Tuesday night which will be held at Baywater Waves. Please bring $5.00 each for the use of the pool and may the best man win. If you have any questions please feel free to give me a call.

Coaches Report 3rd February
Posted on February 3rd, 2010 No commentsI’d like to start my second coaches’ report by welcoming Murray “Muzz” Watson to this years Ellenbrook coaching panel as the Reserve’s coach for 2010. I’m looking forward to working with Muzz as I’m sure he’ll bring some fantastic new ideas to the group. Congratulations on being selected mate and I hope you have great year with the mighty Eels.
Since my last report the boys have been working pretty hard on the training track and judged by the times during yesterday’s second set of 3k time trials you can see how much the teams fitness has improved. Congratulations again to Snow for running the quickest time 10.38sec. Jess Manning ran the next quickest with 10.57sec, followed by Jonesy 11.22sec, Boogs 11.30sec, Sully 11.58sec, and Jenko 12.13sec. Overall nearly all players improved their times, with some cutting over a minute from the last set of time trials. I was even more impressed with the second 2nd set of 3k times as most of them weren’t too far off the first times. Snow was again first over the line with 11.22sec, followed by Jonesy 11.34sec, Jesse 11.44sec, and Sully 12.02sec.
Over the next few weeks the team has some challenging times ahead but with the season fast approaching we all need to be at our peak by round 1 so things will start to ramp up a little as we get closer. I hope the playing group can maintain the positive attitude they have displayed so far as we push through these weeks.
On a sad note the club will farewell one of its former “Founders Medal” winners in Shea Jenkins who will be moving to the Gold Coast at the beginning of March. Jenko has been an instrumental part of the footy club over the past 2 years and will certainly be missed around the club during 2010. On behalf of everyone within the Eels I’d like to personally wish you all the best for the future and hope you pop in when ever you’re visiting Perth. I have no doubt that whichever club you’ll be playing for next year will be lucky to have you on-board. All the best Jenko.
Finally a quick reminder about this Sunday being our first Intra Club match for the year. The game will kick off at 6pm at the home of the Eels and maximum attendance will be expected. It’ll give both myself and Muzz the opportunity to see the playing group being tested in a game environment. Families are more than welcome to come down as we’ll be having a BBQ after the match.
Keep up the good work Eels and remember those of us with the most invested in life are the last to surrender.

Senior CoachCoaches Report 20th Jan 2010
Posted on January 20th, 2010 No commentsThe mighty Eels started pre-season training on 12th Jan and have averaged 45+ players to every training session so far. Being new to the Eels, I feel quite privileged to be given the opportunity to coach the side as I feel we’ve got a fantastic playing group which will give us a great platform to build on over the season.
One thing that’s really stood out so far is the enthusiastic approach the players have shown, which has been really positive. We all know that enthusiasm breeds enthusiasm, and I’m a firm believer that the more the players are enjoying their footy, the better the results will be. I am also happy with the overall fitness and skills within the side to date as these two aspects of our game will allow us to develop a unique playing style this year.
Congratulations must go to Snow for running the quickest 3k time trial on Thursday night, with a time of 11m25s. Those other players who impressed were Jesse 11m29s, Jonesy 11m30s, Boogs 11m49m, and Dylan who ran 11m57s. The next 3k time trails will be held on Tuesday 2nd Feb and hopefully players improve their times. This session will be followed up by a team meeting so maximum attendance will be expected this night.
In closing my first report, I’d like to take the time in welcoming all new and old players down to the footy club this year and wish you all success for the season ahead. If you know of any players who haven’t made it down to training so far, give them a call and get them down because season 2010 will be very successful for the mighty Eels and we want as many players possible to share the successful times with us.
Finally, keep up the good work lads and continue towards your improvement as a side. Those of us who work the hardest in life are those who deserve great things, so remember while there are some tough times ahead over the pre-season, there are also some rewarding times ahead come game day.
